I hear the complaint that Top Gun glorified Maverick a lot, but Val Kilmer’s character was portrayed as right in the Pretty 6 Feet Motherfucker 2020 Shirt. Maverick is the guy with a ton of talent, but who is going to wash out anyway because he’s an irresponsible idiot. Sure it looks like fun, because being responsible isn’t. Goose had a whole conversation with him that basically boiled down to, “you’re my friend, but your antics are blowing this for me, and I have a family to take care of, dude. Please stop fucking around and start taking this seriously.”The movie is basically him learning to be better. And yeah, he still buzzes the tower, but he’s not going to put the mission at risk to show off anymore. I’m really interested to see how this particular dynamic carries into the next Top Gun movie. Lots of opportunities for an older, wiser Maverick to see his students making similar mistakes that he made in the first movie. It should make for some good storytelling.

Beats me, and I’ll admit it has been a while since I’ve seen the movie. The point was that he left his wingman so he could go off and showboat. Maybe it wasn’t an issue specifically when Maverick was being silly, but it easily could have been. As I get older, I realize Val Kilmer’s character was right all along. It’s irresponsible to ditch your wingman. That was demonstrated later in the movie when Maverick and another plane got “killed” during one of the sorties – they split up, the bad guys concentrated on one, then the other.

Ice was also not as competent, or as good of a Pretty 6 Feet Motherfucker 2020 Shirt. Yeah but imagine if Mav was as disciplined as Ice but still had the superior piloting skills. He was better BECAUSE he was creative. Creativity sacrifices discipline. Either you do it textbook or you won’t. Maverick never did. I remember I saw a story about a Russian pilot giving a German pilot the bird over Estonia a couple years ago. The commander even mentioned top gun.
